Mission of Configuration Management

Mission of Configuration Management is to provide a logical model of the IT Infrastructure. The process does it by identifying, controlling, maintaining and verifying the versions of all configuration items in existance with the organisation and determining the relationships between those items.

The four keywords here are:

- identification
- control
- status (maintenance)
- audit and verification

Configuration Management supports its mission through all the factors listed above that relates to all the items comprising the IT infrastructure and which are under the control of Configuration Management. Configuration Management database (CMDB) is a database of such items. The database should be updated after each change implemented to the IT infrastructure. Using this attitude in CMDB organizations can store accurate information on its IT infrastructure. The Configuration Management process should be then considered as very close one to Change Management and Release Management processes.
